What exactly do I need apiary boxes for?

The hive is one of the most important foundations for the colonies to successfully build honeycombs and produce honey in it. Large hives are erected and serve as a home for the insects. However, there are also many reasons why you should have one or another scion box on hand. The downsized hives provide space for only a small amount of combs, but especially for young bee colonies and their rearing, this is sufficient. Thus, a substantial mass of bees is necessary to fill the frame and provide the brood with the necessary heat.

The frames are available in different sizes. Here it is advantageous if you already know how large the later hives and their frames will be. If the dimensions correspond to the dimensions in the box, it will be easier to transfer the bees to the large hives later.

The frames are also helpful if you want to move a queen that has been mated. This queen comes from the mating box and is first transferred to the scion box. Here you need only small bee material, if it concerns smaller boxes. We have different variants in our assortment precisely because high demands are placed on the laying boxes:

  • Laying boxes with overwintering magazine
  • Complete junior hive
  • Variants with bottom slider
  • Saddle roofs for scion boxes
  • Feeding frames for layer boxes

The construction of the box

Often the hives are provided as modular systems. This means that you have the option of gradually adapting the hives to the respective needs of the bees and brood. The structure itself is similar to that of the classic hives. Often frames can be added, which is especially useful when the colony is growing but is not yet ready for the large hive. The replaceable bottom and the lids or roofs can also be selected individually. For wintering, for example, it is important that you can integrate a feeding frame.

Offered are the scion boxes made of wood or plastic as well as Styrofoam. Which material is best suited for your plans depends on what you need the trays for.

  • classical boxes offer space for up to six honeycombs
  • Additions of inserts increase the size of the boxes
  • Wooden boxes provide optimal climate for bees

What kind of accessories are available for the boxes?

In the online store at Bienenzucht-Profi you will find a comprehensive selection of scion boxes. We offer the classic wooden sweep box, but also provide you with cupping boxes as well as scion boxes for up to six combs. We pay attention to practical details of the products, such as aluminum ventilation grids and the practical bottom sliders. Our experts are convinced of modular systems.

For this reason, we have, among other things, a comprehensive range of accessories with which you can optimize or also supplement the scion boxes. For example, if you would like to add a gable roof to your existing boxes, we have galvanized variants in our selection.

Half frames and feed frames are an important aspect in terms of accessories, as they are necessary additions in the growth of the bee colonies and are also relevant for overwintering. You may also already be using scion boxes, but now need additional wires or closures for overwintering. In this case, you will also find at Bienenzucht-Profi. We are also happy to advise you on the selection. Since there are products from different manufacturers and for different boxes, the decision is often not easy.

Is it necessary to paint the trays?

If you are investing in scion boxes, you may be asking yourself whether you need to paint them as well. Hive painting is already a classic and many beekeepers swear by it to mark the hives in terms of color, but above all to protect them against external influences. Our experts therefore recommend that you also take advantage of this option for the hive boxes. If you have opted for a wooden version, an optimal bee climate can be created in it. However, moisture, heat and cold from the outside can also cause damage to the frames. With a coat of paint you can ensure that the shelf life is extended.

Keep in mind that when raising colonies, pests can often cause a reduction in success. Therefore, we at Beekeeping Professional have some special paints in the selection, which can effectively help or prevent against the infestation of insects.
